Sports
The Olympics motto for the Athletics sport is .Citius, Altius, Fortius. meaning "faster, higher, stronger." That is certainly the motto of Jamaican athletics over the years, especially in Track and Field. Track and Field is one of the top sports in Jamaica along with Cricket and Football (soccer). These sports, as well as others, have brought national pride to Jamaica on many occasions. Sporting events, especially when they involve competitions in such games as the Olympics, can stop the pace of life in Jamaica. People are glued to the radio and television at such times. Many sporting events are held at the national stadium and arena and these venues are often packed to capacity. Victories are celebrated in jubilation and can be very emotional for young and old.Sports are part of the culture in Jamaica and young people are active in sports and games on a daily basis in every community across the island. They play with or without the proper equipment and this provides exercise, fun and training that often motivate many towards competition in the international arena. Thus, many, if not all, sporting activities start in the communities. It is easy to spot the next Asafa Powell, who is our reigning 100-metre champion and the world fastest man [2006] or Veronica Campbell, the world fastest woman [2006], as well as others who performed so well in the last Olympics. Older persons also participate in sports and games for recreation.
Jamaican athletes excel in sports and play for the love of the game. Almost all major sports, both winter and summer, are appreciated and played by Jamaicans both locally and abroad. They excel in physical sports as well as games played with artfulness, concentration, and finesse. These games include fencing and chess. Other sporting activities such as swimming is not as profiled as it could be, especially in the international arena, but others like horse racing have stood the test of time and continue to mesmerize and interest people and provide a source of employment for others. Each year in Jamaica, a number of sporting events are held in the national stadium and in schools. Some of these events are the Boys and Girls Champs, school basketball championships and rugby and soccer games. Jamaicans have been fortunate to share in the glory of many of their athletes who have gone against odds in participating in the winter Olympics in the bobsled competitions and qualifying and playing in the FIFA World Cup. These kinds of exposure have brought Jamaica recognition in the field of sports to heightened levels. People all over the world still look forward to seeing Jamaicans in the winter Olympics and continue to find see it as novelty.
